Sorry about the last skipped page, guys. Stuff got busy here and I ended up with another virus, and during my days off too. It's been a bad year. Half the ward seems to be either coming down with or still trying to get over this years wave of respiratory tract infections.
First off... congrats to Royce in the success of his crowd funded audio book. *Insert round of applause here.* Captive of the Red Vixen is a goer. I will let you all know when the audio book becomes available to buy. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this very worthy cause. Support for independent writers and publishers is one of the best uses for the internet.
From this page on wards I'll be doing the rough art work digitally, most of the inking by hand, and finishing, corrections and any really technical drawing on photoshop. See how that turns out.
On this page... I dislike Velum's face, just couldn't get it right. But messing around with it was eating into my time so I've decided to leave it as it is with a weird expression. I may go back to it when I have time and redo it. I like the way Mel came out in the bottom panel. Somehow I feel I've got the knack of drawing snarly animal muzzles... no idea why... but it's a handy skill. It's one of those things that I don't even have to think about to draw, unlike extreme perspectives or looking up at a face which is painful for me to do. Anyway... mama vulpine to the rescue! And a surprised Terinu lets his guard down for a moment. He'll deny everything later.
Hi again everyone. This page is my first attempt at mixing both hand and digital inking. It's also my first effort inking with my new Pental brush pens. I think I'm a bit heavy handed with it. The line widths are a bit thick for my liking. I'm going to keep practicing as I enjoyed hand inking much more than digital. The satellite took longer then I expected. When i loaded the blues into my graphics program and rotated the canvas so I could work on it vertically (Much easier to line everything up that way) I was flabbergasted at just how skewed my sketch was. The ink work turned into mostly redrawing and guess work. I think in future I will design anything geometric digitally so I can get all the lengths and angles right first time. There are other major flaws with this pic but I decided to leave things as they are.
Also a very important announcment! My good friend and dedicated supporter of Terinu Mr. Royce Day is working to release the first of his fantastic books as an audio book through Audible.com. Captive of the Red Vixen is the first in a series of well written books based in a Sci Fi fantasy universe and follows the story the young foxen noble Rolas Darktail and his misadventures with the infamous Red Vixen. I highly recommend this adult fiction series for lovers of high adventure and anthropomorphic based fiction. Royce is currently seeking backers through kickstarter to finance a professional narrator. There are plenty of bonus incentives for jumping on board with this project up to your own copy of the completed project and more. If you're feeling really generous you can even have your own character created for a future novel! Every dollar will be greatly appreciated and small donations are most welcome. Please check out the page link below and help support grass root authors and creators!
The Red Vixen series is available for sale on Amazon for the kindle.
First off, again I'm sorry about the delayed update. As I posted in the blog I had a really nasty infection which pretty much wiped me from doing anything useful for over a week. I'm still on A.B.s and the damned thing doesn't want to go away. I am feeling better than I was but not quite over it yet. I feel stress levels may be a significant factor in this.
Also, not going into details here, but there have been other family things that have required my attention, and a lot of it. Unfortunately this is going to be ongoing and its sapping not only my time but also my creativity. It's really hard for me to concentrate on something as all consuming as a graphic novel when there are so many other worries dominating my brain run time. I will endeavor to continue updating this comic regularly but I will shift the update day permanently to Saturday as it will fit better into my work schedule.
Finally, with the next page I am going to try marry both hand and digital inking and see if I can get the best of both worlds. Will try this for a few pages and judge how we all feel about the results. I'm thinking that this is the way I'll probably go but we'll see.
Here it is... the first page to be completely digitally inked. let me know what you think.
Inking it this wat takes a lot longer. And Gwen's hair... ARGHHHHH. I hate doing her hair. I'm thinking about trying to hyprid hand inking with digital as digital does have so many more advantages. I will definitely be sketching out the comic digitally. i have been experimenting with that and the power to chop and change things quickly is so much easier then the scissors and sticky tape method I normally use.
Page up again. Last week was pretty horrific. I won't go into details 'except I felt like I spent most of my waking hours sitting in waiting rooms or driving to and from appointments. It culminated in waking Saturday morning to find the house had gone dead. I knew straight away. I've got this annoying thing where I can hear the buzz of electricity in the power points and under power lines. Seriously I can't go to sleep if the power point for the air conditioner above my bed is switched on, it sounds like a hive of bees. Admin Wayne thinks I'm crazy. I think it's why I like getting out and going for walks away from civilization... the silence is wonderful. Anyway, I wake up and the house is dead silent. We all get up and go through the usual rigmarole... been having gray outs and black outs while the power company is fixing on the network. But there are no explanatory texts from the power company, it is just our house. So we switch everything off, trying to reset the clipsal. But every time we turn something on and it starts to draw power it snaps off the switch. We gave up and called a sparky who took over an hour to isolate the problem circuit. I might add here that our house is about 70 years old and was built in the day when building regulations were not quite so stringent and the old part, not our extension, still runs on old black cabling. Well the black cabling is literally melting off its insulation with age. There is no quick fix. We need to completely rewire the old section of the house. And, yes, that's a four figure problem. In the meantime the sparky set the house so that some parts the power works and some parts it doesn't. Showers are now taken by candle light and the white goods have been rigged with long extension cords to the remaining live power points while we await repairs. Stellar end to a crappy week. Computers, though, are now up and running. Yay!
In other news: I'm debating about whether to ink the comic in pen or on the 'puter. Pen is faster and more convenient... can do it anywhere. Plus I just got these fantastically sexy new Pental brush pens where the tips are actually high quality brushes and are such fun to ink with. But the 'puter is much better for any straight lines or anything that requires perspective. And also for making corrections. Pen is a pain to correct if I make a mistake. But the 'puter at present takes me something like 7 hours to ink a page while pens are considerably less. It may come down to time. Anyways, the next two pages will be computer inked so see what you think.
Finally... Happy Birthday to my two sons, Ryan and Chayton. Love you both to bits, guys. So very fortunate to have two such wonderful young men as yourselves for my sons.
Now up. Sorry guys. Busy week. I'm trying to set time aside to improve my art skills so I'm dodging between that and doing my comic. Plus inking digitally is SLLLOOOOOWWWW work. I'm hoping that the learning curve is step enough that I can get it down below four hours a page pretty soon. I've been sourcing out youtube tutorials to look how I can refine and speed things up.
Of course there is one thing that is not going to help the process at all... and that is WILDSTAR!!! Oh gawd, shoot me but I've gone and fallen for another MMO. Our page admin, my partner, have been beta'ing it since it moved into beta stage. Within the second day of playing we'd both subb'ed. Think WOW in space, but brought forward ten years technology wise. It's WOW vanilla 2.0 with some pretty damn awesome game mechanics and killer raiding. Beta'ing ended officially about ten days ago and all of our characters have been deleted. #sad# BUT>>>> We have early access so for us the game finally goes live in half an hour. I'm not going to get much sleep before work tonight and by not much I mean none.
Just so you knows what I'm talking about... http://youtu.be/hhSOmAbefRI for a fan created song that explains it all.
